Cooking: The Heart of Our Homestead

Cooking for us is as much a passion as it is a means of sustenance. While everyone needs nutrition to survive, we view cooking as the act of taking everything we produce and bringing it together to provide for our family—a process that yields great personal rewards.
It is hard to imagine homesteading—growing food, raising livestock, and preserving—without the joy of preparing and eating that wonderful harvest. When you combine this with the health benefits of walking out your back door to literally “shop” for your groceries, the rewards are endless on a personal level.
We love to try new recipes on a weekly basis, but we also cherish the recipes of our parents and family that we still make and enjoy regularly. Here, we will share some of these recipes with you, along with the different methods we use to prepare them—from cooking outside to using modern technologies like bread machines.
Additionally, we use this area to provide the tools and methods we use to preserve the foods we raise. We can, freeze, use cold storage, and freeze-dry as much food as possible to prepare for the long term and help us through to the next growing season.
We hope that you will gain great benefit from this section. Please share your thoughts and ideas—we would love to hear from you!
