Meat Rabbits: High Efficiency for the Homestead

Rabbits are prolific meat producers and are ideal for homesteads of any size. They take up very little space, do not consume a lot of feed, and offer an incredible return on investment.

With just 2 does and 1 buck, you can produce hundreds of pounds of meat each year.

Why We Raise Rabbits

Beyond the meat, rabbits contribute to the homestead cycle in a way few other animals can.

  • Garden Gold: Rabbits produce some of the best natural fertilizer of any animal. Unlike chicken manure, rabbit manure is “cold,” meaning it can be used immediately in the garden without composting. It provides great results instantly.

  • Low Impact: They require minimal infrastructure and feed compared to larger livestock.

Our Breeding Schedule

We typically breed our rabbits twice per year, and that provides enough meat to last our family throughout the yea

While breeding times can vary, we aim for early March and late August.

We chose this schedule so the kits (babies) are not dealing with extreme heat in the summer or freezing cold in the winter. It keeps the survival rate high and the stress low.

A Note on Processing

If you have never processed rabbits, we want to be honest: it can be challenging the first time.

However, once you have learned the proper techniques, you will be able to move quickly. It is a skill that allows you to provide an excellent, healthy food resource for your family for many years without a lot of extra work.
